στο χάος μ’ ομπρέλα, τροχιά και καπρίτσια;

The little inhabitants of Jonnson’s world build their homes on the branches of trees, on top of cliffs, on the backs of animals; anywhere except on solid ground. No matter where or at what height these little people find themselves, they all have one thing in common – a love for music (just like Jannson himself). Look carefully and you will see gramophones attached to the roofs of houses, popping out of windows, welded onto hovercrafts and fixed on top of train roofs.

One aspect that all of Jannson’s work have in common, is the absence of the sun. The only source of light in his world is the moon (or a moon). Inhabitants have to get by with the help of lanterns and fires. The absence of the sun contributes to the overall infatuating melancholic and almost ‘dirty’ look of his art (which is a good thing). I compare his unique look to that of vintage photographs – his work has a ‘grainy’ almost ‘scratchy’ like texture and lacks the boldness that a modern camera’s flash would give (which is once again a good thing).

Jannson uses digital and traditional art tools to bring his dreamlike images to life. His work depicts a fantasy universe where space crafts roam the sky and sinister and obscure characters inhabit the space. “His work has a dreamy, storytelling quality with a definite sense of ‘you never know what magic is just around the corner’. The mix of dark and whimsical makes it very fairy tale compatible” (Once Upon a Blog). His latest series of illustrations are called ‘green punk’ and portrays a mysterious world that appears to be covered in a blanket of (green) fog. However, this murky world is uncovered by the dim light of the moon.
