“Freedom may be a value in politics, but it is not a value in morals.”

“We need a moral philosophy which can speak significantly of Freud and Marx and out of which aesthetic and political views can be generated. We need a moral philosophy in which the concept of love, so rarely mentioned now, can once again be made central.”

“The most essential and fundamental aspect of culture is the study of literature, since this is an education in how to picture and understand human situations.”

“Violence is born of the desire to escape oneself.”

“I think being a woman is like being Irish… Everyone says you’re important and nice, but you take second place all the time.”

“Time can divorce us from the reality of people, it can separate us from people and turn them into ghosts. Or rather it is we who turn them into ghosts or demons. Some kinds of fruitless preoccupations with the past.”

Fear is incomplete knowledge.

You gave too much rein to your imagination. Imagination is a good servant, and a bad master. The simplest explanation is always the most likely.

At my time of life, one knows that the worst is usually true.

But surely for everything you love you have to pay some price.

When the fact doesn’t meet the theory, then let go the theory.

I know there’s a proverb that says ‘To err is human,’ but a human error is nothing to what a computer can do if it tries.

It is completely unimportant. That is why it is so interesting.

Words, madmoiselle, are only the outer clothing of ideas.

What I feel is that if one has got to have a murder actually happening in one’s house, one might as well enjoy it, if you know what I mean.

.A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction

If you do not tell the truth about yourself you cannot tell it about other people

We are nauseated by the sight of trivial personalities decomposing in the eternity of print.

The eyes of others our prisons; their thoughts our cages.

These are the soul’s changes. I don’t believe in ageing. I believe in forever altering one’s aspect to the sun. Hence my optimism.

Women are meant to be loved, not understood.

If a woman wants to hold a man, she has merely to appeal to the worst in him.

A man can be happy with any woman, so long as he does not love her.

The happiness of a married man depends on the people he has not married.

London if full of women who trust their husbands; one can always recognise them because they look so thoroughly happy.

When a woman marries again, it is because she detested her first husband; when a man marries again; it is because he adored his first wife. Women try their luck, men risk theirs.
